KBO Recap: KIA Tigers 16-11 Lotte Giants | August 26 Highlights & Scores

Game Summary

The KIA Tigers hammered the Lotte Giants 16-11 on Tuesday night, putting on a power display that overwhelmed Lotte’s bullpen in what turned into a slugfest at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field. The Tigers struck early and often, building a lead they never relinquished despite a furious Giants comeback attempt. Eight home runs combined—four of them solo shots or two-run blasts that proved decisive—told the story of an offensive showcase that had little to do with pitching prowess.

Rodriguez, tasked with holding the line for Lotte, couldn’t make it out of the fourth inning. He gave up six hits and eight runs in three and two-thirds innings, walking three batters and striking out seven. The early damage came swiftly, and once KIA’s bats got rolling, there was no stopping the momentum.

For KIA, it was the kind of win that masks deeper problems. Kim Tae-hyung earned the victory despite pitching only two and a third innings, allowing two runs on six hits. The Tigers cycled through nine different pitchers in all—a bullpen day that, against a weaker opponent, still delivered results.

Pitching Performance

Huang Dong-ha started for the Tigers and worked two and two-thirds innings, surrendering three runs on four hits while striking out just one batter. The Lotte offense got to him early, but KIA’s hitters answered back faster. Rodriguez’s brief outing proved costly; he couldn’t escape the fourth frame despite recording seven strikeouts. The Giants went through six relievers trying to stop the bleeding.

Min-seok Lee threw an inning and two-thirds for Lotte, but damage control became impossible when he allowed five runs—three of them free passes on the bases. Ji-min Choi’s appearance in the eighth was disastrous, surrendering five hits and five runs in just two-thirds of an inning. By that point, the game had already slipped away.

The Tigers’ bullpen was no pillar of excellence either. Six relievers combined to allow eleven runs, though they managed to get enough outs when it mattered most. Kwaak Do-kyou closed it out cleanly in the ninth with a strikeout, preserving the five-run margin.

Offensive Highlights

Reyes went 4-for-4 at the plate for Lotte—a rare bright spot in a losing effort. The second baseman drove in four runs and added a two-run homer in the third, but even his stellar evening couldn’t offset the offensive firepower coming from the other dugout. Han Dong-hee chipped in with three hits and a walk, keeping the Giants competitive longer than they had any right to be.

Castro, however, was the story. The Tigers’ slugger cracked two home runs—his 14th and 15th of the season—and drove in seven runs. His fourth-inning two-run blast put KIA up 7-3, and he’d add another three-run shot in the seventh off Min-seok Lee. Kim Do-young also went deep twice, tying for the team lead with 39 homers on the year. His solo shot in the first off Rodriguez gave KIA an immediate 1-0 lead they’d build on relentlessly.

Yoon Dong-hee contributed a solo home run for Lotte in the eighth off Choi to make it 14-11, but the Tigers answered with two more runs before the inning ended.

Key Play

The turning point came early. With one out and a runner on first in the third inning, Kim Do-young turned on a Rodriguez fastball and drove it into the left-center gap for a two-run double. That hit gave KIA a 5-2 lead and seemed to break whatever momentum the Giants had built early. Reyes answered with a two-run homer in the same frame, but KIA kept pulling away. Castro’s back-to-back homers in the fourth and seventh innings essentially put the game out of reach, despite Lotte’s fourth-inning rally and eighth-inning surge.

Standings Impact

The win moves KIA to 62-2-50, maintaining fourth place in the standings. The Tigers now sit just two games behind the third-place club. For Lotte, the loss drops them to 50-2-60, still in the cellar at sixth place. The Giants remain four games behind fifth place with fewer than four weeks remaining in the regular season.
